Last July's trip was fantastic! This year with weather permitting it will be even better!
We leave on Friday, July 18 at 7am from the church, head for Ely! to get our permit, tour the town, and then head for Fenske campout for the night. We take off before 6:30am Saturday morning a head for the entry point.
Our entry point and day reservation has been confirmed to enter on Saturday July 19, and exit on Saturday July 26 or Sunday 27. The entry point is #16 Moose/Portage River (north of the Echo Trail. The link to the BWCA info and reservation site is http://bwcaw1.reserveusa.com.
Yes, there is a nice 160 rod portage to kick things off. Let's see 160 x ~17ft, that equals about 9 foot ball fields or ~ 906 yards! The permit cost was $32. Our permint pick up point is at the Kawishiwi Wilderness Station (Just outside of Ely). The group limit size is 9 people and 4 canoes. We must have two adults so this leaves an high adventure opportunity for 7 out of our 13 registered scouts. If any adults are interested please contact Ron.
The route: Attached is an old BWCA map and route (dotted red line). This is an area that I've been on at least 5 times in the past. The entry point is labeled "Moose River Parking Lot". From the parking lot it's a 160 rod portage to the river. After that there 2 short portages before the first lake (Nina-Moose). Couple areas of interest are Warrior Hill, Pictographs (assuming they are still there).
